NASA’s Messenger probe is gathering a wealth of new information about Mercury, the smallest, fastest planet in our solar system, with the most eccentric orbit.
The new data tells scientists that not only is there a lot of unexplained geological activity on the planet orbiting closest to the sun, but that Mercury’s make-up and composition is not at all what would be expected for a rocky, terrestrial, inner system planet. One theory for why Mercury is like it is is that aeons ago, some colossal and now long-departed thing smashed into it.
In short, scientists can not explain why this planet exists as it does.
