The United States Coast Guard has sent the Ryou-Un Maru to the bottom of the ocean with a barrage of artillery shells. The Japanese trawler vanished during the 2011 tsunami only to reappear more than a year later off the Canadian coast, four thousand miles away from its home port. It had allegedly drifted that distance as a ghost ship.
But in spite of the trawler being officially unmanned, the United States Coast Guard refused to allow it to be salvaged, and sank it with artillery fire without ever boarding it, in a part of the ocean selected for its remoteness.
